Q: What does being able to serve Safehaven residents mean to you?Ī: Sub-acute and inpatient care have always had a special place in my heart. Overtime, this can create new neural pathways, thus leading to a new learned movement pattern or functional task. Movement of the body provides input and stimulus to the brain. We use this assessment to create an individualized plan to help the patient make as many gains as possible and improve their quality of life. Q: Why is physical therapy an important part of the recovery process for a TBI patient?Ī: Physical therapists are highly educated to provide a detailed assessment of strength, flexibility, range of motion, sensation, coordination, body awareness, consciousness, balance, and gait. Q: What are some of the biggest benefits of physical therapy for TBI patients?Ī: Physical therapy can help guide patients through activities and exercises to promote brain health, improve motor function, promote normal bodily functions, improve safety awareness and impulsivity, promote highest level of functional independence, and decrease risk of comorbidities. For residents who are actively able to participate in physical therapy, my sessions focus on general strengthening, cardiopulmonary endurance, functional tasks, posture, balance, and coordination. For residents who are in a vegetative or minimally conscious state, physical therapy can help with positioning and stretching to reduce risk of contracture and pressure injuries, provide input into the nervous system, and encourage responsiveness to the environment. Our goal is to maximize their cognitive and physical functioning. Q: What role does physical therapy play in a patient with a traumatic brain injury’s recovery?Ī: Physical therapy plays a very important role in a patient’s life after experiencing a TBI. I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, being active, watching movies, and crocheting. I am now married, and my husband and I have two very spoiled dogs.
